Itochu Europe, the
supplier of Takaya flying probe test systems, has expanded its
services to include board testing using its own equipment and staff
for those companies yet to make such an investment.
One such
company to take up this offer is E C Electronics of Basingstoke,
Hampshire. They have a particular contract for a client who has
developed equipment which could save the lives of air travellers who
fall ill during their flight. The equipment allows trained cabin
crew to link a stricken passenger directly with qualified medical
personnel on the ground thus providing invaluable and speedy
assistance in the case of a medical emergency whilst in the air. The
system and its link will also enable the flight crew to make an
informed decision as to whether or not to continue to their
destination or to divert. The implications for the airlines are
therefore immense, in addition to the effect on the ailing
passenger.
Developed by Hampshire-based Remote Diagnostic
Technologies (RDT), the system known as Tempus 2000 has already been
installed on UK airline bmi british midland’s long haul flights and
Virgin Atlantic has also purchased the equipment.
EC
Electronics is a specialist contract manufacturer devoted to cable
assembly, PCB and electronic product assembly and services many
clients across a broad range of industries, including industrial
electronics, automotive, medical, defence and professional leisure.
They have an extremely modern manufacturing facility and a
strong commitment to quality and have earned an enviable reputation
as a reliable and professional total solution provider in all of
these industries but the investment in such systems as flying probe
test equipment are yet to be justifiable.
This new in-flight
medical link facility is still in its early stages and therefore EC
Electronics needed to find a test facility which would be flexible
enough to allow for the testing of boards through the product’s
future development. Bill Green, EC’s managing director, needed to
source a flexible and effective test process and found that “The
test service from Itochu, using the Takaya equipment, perfectly met
our needs”. ” We had access to the best equipment for the task as
well as the most proficient operators on that system – the best of
both worlds”.
According to Graham South, Itochu’s Takaya
Product Manager ”Many electronics manufacturing contractors cannot
justify the investment in flying probe test systems but need the
ability to test small batches and even “one-off’s” as part of the
development cycle. Itochu has recognised this opportunity in the
marketplace and will make available its equipment and expertise in
flying probe test to serve this part of the market. Naturally it is
hoped that once a test services customer can justify the investment
they will purchase Takaya equipment from Itochu. In the meantime,
however, Itochu will be more than happy to carry out sub-contract
test services for those that require that facility.”
